Text: Contractor William H. Kishbaugh built this house in 1892 for Charles T. Rather (1855-1931), a leader in the booming Gonzales cotton industry. When his family moved to Austin in 1910, the property was bought by farmer T.B. Fussell. His heirs lived here until 1961, when the structure was purchased and restores by John Hornbuckle (D. 1964) of Houston, and his wife, Margaret Shearn Hornbuckle. She continued to reside here after her marriage in 1970 to James M. Scott.
