Kissing Oak

Kissing Oak

San Marcos
Hays County, Texas
29 53.170’ N 97 56.183 W

On July 2th, 1857 Sam Houston gave a campaign speech under this tree. He was seeking the governor's office once again. Some young ladies had made a Texas flag and presented it to him before the speech. After the speech, Houston walked into the crowd to shake people's hands. However, when he reached the young ladies who'd made the flag for him he kissed them on the cheek. Thus, the name "the Kissing Oak".

Species: Live Oak (Quercus virginiana)
